Improved intake services increase Veterans Benefits Administration responsiveness

The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) offers a variety of benefits to Service members, Veterans and their families. In the past, claimants needed to mail, fax or electronically upload required documents. This labor-intensive, manual process meant it took between five and 60 days for VBA employees to input application documents into the system, creating long wait times for services for Veterans struggling with injury and illness. VBA needed to find a way to accelerate claims processing for the more than 14 million documents it receives annually for compensation and pension benefits.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has over 400,000 employees on its payroll. Accurately capturing time and attendance plus supporting personnel benefits for almost half a million people requires high-quality, adaptable software and effective management. In July 2018, VA transitioned its entire timekeeping system to the VA Time and Attendance System (VATAS). Since then, VATAS has required regular testing, updates and verification to ensure continued effective service for VA’s large and dynamic workforce.
